Awareness–Orlando Creatives Join Together for a Show of Strength

Awareness - Two Stories, One Powerful Message (18+) – October 20, 2024 | Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater

Orlando is a vibrant hub of artistic talent and innovation. The city’s numerous regional theaters, abundant theme park entertainment and renowned arts centers like the Dr. Phillips Center foster an environment that attracts talent and nurtures creativity. Given the many opportunities, local performers, writers and directors have collaborated to produce their own work. Audiences seeking something fresh can enjoy these original works at Orlando Fringe Festival.

This week, two acclaimed pieces from the world-renowned festival will be presented as a special one-night event at the Dr. Phillips Center. Awareness - Two Stories, One Powerful Message features incredible local talent who will take you on a journey of resilience, heartbreak and inspiring perseverance. One dollar from each ticket sold will be donated to the Promise Fund.

Brandon Roberts: Award-Winning Director & Playwright

Local actor and director Brandon Roberts has received awards for his pieces at Orlando Fringe Festival and written original works for regional theaters like Orlando Shakes. His background as a comedic actor shines through his written interpretations of stories, highlighting the narratives with sharp wit. The first piece featured in Awareness is Roberts’ production of My Left T!t. The short play is inspired by his longtime friend Gwen, who ultimately lost her battle with breast cancer. Drawing from Gwen’s personal blogs, he smoothly weaves her story into a work that honors her sense of humor and resilience.

Experience Brandon Roberts’ heartfelt tale of Omie the dog and Gwen, a woman bravely battling breast cancer. Published posthumously and brought to life by Brandon, this production explores the profound impact of cancer on her life and has received accolades, including the Best Veteran Producer Audience Choice Award and the Critic’s Choice Award for Best Drama at the 2019 Orlando International Fringe Festival.

Jennica McCleary: Performer, Producer, Powerhouse

McCleary is well-known in the Orlando community as a dynamic creator. She is booked and busy, taking part in two shows at the Dr. Phillips Center this week. In the spirit of the Halloween season, McCleary will star in her production of Winnie's Rock Cauldron Cabaret showcasing her talents as a Bette Midler tribute artist. She’ll also take the stage in Artisanal Carcinoma, a deeply personal narrative about her breast cancer journey. McCleary’s story highlights her versatile talents as an entertainer and showcases her strength as a survivor.

Jennica McCleary’s Artisanal Carcinoma blends dark humor with her journey through breast cancer. Playing burlesque artist Jennica Tastrophe, she shares her experiences with 17 rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and recovery. Premiering at the 2023 Orlando International Fringe Festival, her raw storytelling captivates and inspires.
