Student Spotlight: Jonah Bloom

Meet Jonah Bloom, a vibrant and passionate 14-year-old student who participated in the 23/24 season of our Quarter Notes program at the AdventHealth School of the Arts at Dr. Phillips Center. Jonah's journey began in 2023 when he first participated in the Take It from the Top Broadway Intensive summer camp. His initial experience left a lasting impression, as he was honored with a solo in the final showcase, setting the stage for his growing love of the performing arts.

When asked about his favorite part of attending the School of the Arts, Jonah enthusiastically mentions the joy of meeting new people and learning from experienced performers. "Every single program and class have so much passion and love put into them, and that’s what makes it so enjoyable," he shares. Among the various programs he's been part of, Take It from the Top remains a standout for him, as it was his first immersive experience in the performing arts, filled with special moments and learning opportunities.

Jonah's exposure to the world of theater extends beyond the School of the Arts. He’s enjoyed several productions at Dr. Phillips Center, including The Lion King, Hamilton, School of Rock, Fiddler on the Roof and Wicked. When it comes to musicals, Jonah finds it hard to pick just one favorite but eventually lands on Little Shop of Horrors for its engaging characters and the iconic puppet.

Reflecting on his favorite experiences at the School of the Arts, Jonah highlights watching his sister participate in a master class with Michael James Scott, who plays the Genie in Broadway’s Aladdin. "It was so amazing to see my sister show how talented and incredible she is. I’m truly so proud of her," he says with obvious pride and admiration. Another standout experience was getting a backstage tour of The Lion King by Scar, a role he himself portrayed in a local production.

His love for the performing arts stretches across the board, encompassing writing, directing and acting. His dreams of mastering all three, creating beautiful stories to share with the world. "Mr. Tim Hanes has helped me bring that out through my singing and my acting, and I’m so grateful for him," he adds.

Jonah is particularly excited about improving his dancing skills. Although he considers himself an adequate dancer, the choreographers at the School of the Arts have played a significant role in his progress. With their guidance, he hopes to become a triple threat, mastering singing, dancing and acting.

The impact of performing arts on Jonah's life is profound. It has given him a clear sense of direction and a path to pursue his dreams. The AdventHealth School of the Arts at Dr. Phillips Center has provided him with a platform to express himself and explore his passion, significantly shaping his future aspirations. "It’s made me realize what roads to go down to fulfill this dream, and I’m so excited for what the future holds," he gushes.

Jonah's journey at the AdventHealth School of the Arts is a testament to the transformative power of the performing arts. His experiences, opportunities and the support of mentors like Tim Hanes have been instrumental in his growth. Jonah will continue to learn and evolve, but his story is already an inspiring reminder of the fulfillment that comes from following your passion.
